Description
Discover one of the hidden treasures of Lyon’s silk heritage with a guided tour of the Brochier Soieries Printing Workshop, a unique place where traditional silk craftsmanship is still practiced by hand.
Located in the historic silk district of Lyon Croix-Rousse, this private production workshop has been preserving and sharing the art of traditional silk printing since 1993.
During this immersive guided tour, you will explore a rare working workshop that continues to use historic techniques such as Lyon-style frame printing, block printing, and hand painting on silk velvet panne. With more than 3,000 printing frames, some dating back to the 1950s, the workshop creates refined patterns that combine heritage craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Your visit will be guided by skilled printers who will reveal the fascinating process behind traditional Lyon silk printing. You will discover each stage of production: selecting fine silk fabrics, preparing pigments, installing the silk on long printing tables, applying richly textured color pastes, printing the designs, and drying and fixing the colors.
Upstairs, witness a live demonstration of hand painting on silk velvet panne, a prestigious Lyon specialty once highly sought after by the great fashion designers of the 20th century. This rare demonstration highlights the precision and artistry required to create these exceptional handcrafted textiles.
